DIY Sweet Aroma for the home

I just love the smell of baked goods cooking, but sometimes I just don't have the time to well um.... bake.  So if you want the baked smell without the baked goods try this recipe.

First you need ground cinnamon, an orange/tangerine/clementine and cloves...

Now you take your orange/tangerine or clementine and push the cloves in the skin like this.....

After you have the cloves in the orange, fill your pot with water and add about 2 tablespoons of cinnamon (nutmeg or any other spice is optional)

Now you're ready to heat the cinnamon water and orange with cloves on the stove.  The steam will smell wonderful! Make sure that you watch the water to make sure that it doesn't boil out.  Sit back and enjoy the delicious smell.

The story behind Mz. Pearl and K. Milan

I have had many people ask me about why I chose to start Mz. Pearl Pretty Parties and K. Milan Mobile Spa and why did I use two different names.  Well the truth of the matter is yes, they are owned by the same person...me, and they have similar concepts, to build confidence by promoting healthy skincare and self-assurance.  BUT....one is for girls and one is primarily for women.  I myself struggled for many years feeling inadequate, second guessing myself, not feeling beautiful even to the point of depression, clinically!  Many of those feelings stemmed from my childhood and some of them came from my adulthood but the common denominator is the insecurities that I had as a child followed me as I grew.  I can remember as a child hating my complexion because I felt like I was too dark and I would despise when people said stuff like you are pretty...for a dark skinned girl WHAT THE HECK WAS THAT SUPPOSED TO MEAN... oh and I absolutely hated my naturally curly hair because the kids teased me and said it looked like a Jheri Curl. Those types of insults became destructive seeds that dwelled in my spirit only to grow sizably year after year.  My self-perception became the water and the sun and provided all of the nutrients for self-hatred.  Isn’t that something, the words that people speak over your life have the power to become your own thoughts if you don’t stop it at its root.   The bible even said in Proverbs 23:7, As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he.   I have realized that the negative seeds that I have allowed to grow took time to mature and like with any vine, in order to stop its growth, I had to pull it from its root!  Now, I embrace my complexion and I love my hair.  It's funny how it took years to realize that people tan to get darker and that my naturally curly hair was truly a gift from God because I had that “wash and go hair”, and it saved me lots of money, not to mention naturally curly hair is all the hype now!  The naysayers, the evil seeds and the people who played off of my weakness were just hindrances that would eventually motivate me to reach my potential.  Which leads me back to the original question, why did I choose to start Mz. Pearl AND K. Milan, well I wanted to use my past hurts to encourage young girls that they are beautiful, unique and special, they are PEARLS.  Likewise for women, I wanted them to know that regardless of what life may have said about them and regardless of their past experiences that they are beautiful, they still have a lot of potential they have what it takes to be that woman that God intended them to be.  My mobile spa is my ministry and my method of reaching girls and women are through skincare and spa parties.  I have asked God to bless my hands, my mouth and my overall spirit that I will be able to connect with girls and women all over to help encourage, uplift and not just erase the signs of aging but erase the signs of inadequacies.  If I can play a role in helping to plant seeds of encouragement and confidence in girls, then hopefully those seeds will grow and manifest and take root to developing confident women.  Likewise, for women, pulling those negative roots up and growing new seeds of EVERYTHING GOD SAID WE ARE, is my goal.  Guess what God said that WE are made in HIS image and therefore I am beautiful and so are you!  Be blessed!

Life

It's interesting how life has a mind of its own!  You make all of these lavish plans for your future but then the future comes and the plan goes....by the waste side that it!  So what's next, what do I do you ask yourself.  Only for yourself to have NO CLUE, after all what you thought would be isn't exactly what is.  This is my story and guess what, I have realized that the saying is true.... you know the one about If you want to make God laugh, tell Him your plans.  Well God is rolling on the floor laughing at me because He has another plan for me and I am thankful!  No, I don't have the job that affords me a lot of luxurious things, but I have my health, my family, my needs and MY GOD.  That alone is the recipe for happiness.  God is awesome and He is guiding me to places that I could never imagine.  I guess it is true, parents do know best, because MY FATHER in heaven is working it all out for me.  After all, I am His daughter!!!!!

Pumpkin Foot Scrub...mmmmm

Here's a riddle for you.....what does a pumpkin have in common with your feet...NOTHING...until you make this delectable Pumpkin Foot Scrub with leftover pumpkin from Thanksgiving and a few other ingredients.  Did you know that pumpkins are full of natural enzymes that exfoliate your skin, which is GREAT for tired worn out Black-Friday shopping feet!  So let's whip up a batch of Pumpkin Foot Scrub together.  All you need is:
  • 1/4 cup cooked or canned Pumpkin (puree)
  • 1/4 cup of Brown Sugar
  • 1 tablespoon of almond oil  or olive oil if that's what you have
  • 1 tablespoon ground coffee beans (whatever kind that you drink)
  • Fresh Lemon juice squeezed from 1/2 lemon or lemon juice from the store
Now that you have all of the ingredients, just mix them together in a bowl and set it aside.  Soak your feet in a basin full of warm water with moisturizing soap for about 10 minutes and then use your handmade scrub and scrubadub away!  Rinse off with warm water, and pat dry and follow up with a moisturizer!  Your feet will be soft and hopefully beautiful. Use any leftover scrub on your body but not your face and rinse off in the shower!

Be Thankful!

As we approach the Thanksgiving Holiday, we all hear "Be Thankful"!  But are we reallllly thankful?  We (including myself ) are all guilty of complaining and at times being unappreciative, so during this time of the year we ought to really put things into perspective. Have you ever thought how our lives would change if we had an outer body experience?  Suppose, instead of worrying about what you were going to wear to work, you were having to take your child to have surgery, or a week after you got into an argument with your friend/family member that they turned up missing or dead, the argument would be pretty insignificant then.  So in the season of Thanksgiving truly be thankful and put situations into perspective... When we complain about our jobs, think about the jobless, when we complain about our pregnancy, think about the couple that is desperately trying to conceive, when we complain about our looks, think about the burn victim, when we complain about our hair, think about the cancer patient, when we complain about our children, think about the family that buried their child, when we complain about our parents, think about the person whose parents are deceased, when we complain about our spouse, think about the person whose significant other is across seas serving our country and when we complain about ourselves, think about how God sacrificed His only Son for You and Me....I think we get the picture.  So let's embrace our today and be thankful for our blessings and know that God is in control!  Thanksgiving is a Day, but we need to make it a lifestyle!

I am Abstract!

Too many of us are walking around holding our heads down in regards to our beauty.  Why, because we are comparing ourselves to Kim Kardashian, Halle Berry, the person up the street, our co-worker etc.  The truth is we are God’s masterpieces and He took a blank canvas out and painted our face and body according to His desire.  He allowed us to be a walking portrait.  Some of the grandest artist painted images that to the average person seemed slightly distorted, unusual and complex.  For instance, Pablo Picasso spent much of his life testing the limits of traditional representation and yet is the very reason why he is celebrated today.  Picasso’s brilliance lies in the fact that he is also one of God’s strokes of genius.  Perhaps God allowed Picasso to paint such exaggerated figures to prove a point.  You may not look like the norm or blend with what many feel is the acceptable version of beauty, but you are one of God’s most prized illustrations and your cost is invaluable.  So the next time, you look in the mirror and say, “this is flawed”  think about Pablo Picasso, Georges Seurat, Claude Monet, Paul Cézanne, Vincent Van Gogh, and Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec and remember that their artwork is not only protected but  sells for millions of dollars even though it may look like a grotesque version of reality.  True lovers of art understand, the beauty of the artwork lies within its uniqueness.  Remember, you were once a blank canvas and God took the time to perfect your very image so rock it because you are priceless.

Balance

Recently, I posted the question “I honestly want to know how other working mothers/wives find balance, with handling children, work, school if applicable, bills, household upkeep, friends, "me time" etc!” on Facebook.  I received many responses that all seemed as “when you figure it out let me know!”.  Too many of us, are spreading ourselves too thin and as a result we get overwhelmed, tired, irritable and just no good!  Going back to my original question, I realized that there are just some things that cannot be ignored and/or put to the side, i.e. kids and work.  But I still needed to find a way to find balance in my life.  Therefore, I compiled a list of the 5 most important things in my life (in no particular order) that HAD to be done.  My list consisted of 1) home/family (children & spouse), 2) work, 3) schoolwork, 4) prayer/devotion/worship, 5) I drew blank on number 5.  This made me realize that numbers 1-4 pretty much kept me occupied and I was making room for 5, which almost never consisted of doing something strictly for me.  I also realized that in order for me to maintain balance, I had to put ME in slot 5.  I had to learn that it is ok to say NO to everyone/everything else.  Many times, I have inconvenienced myself to convenience others.  Now there is nothing wrong with being nice, helpful or a friend, but if you are run down, burnt out and overstretched, it’s nothing wrong with a friend being a friend to you, by being helpful and nice by understanding that you are TIRED AND ALREADY STRETCHED TO THE MAX.  However, you cannot wait on someone else to realize your reality so you have to be the one to make a stand for your sanity.  The moral of this story is, I must take care of all of my required responsibilities first and I must include ME in that.  Everything and Everyone else will just have to understand.

Baby Shower Candy Pacifiers

So my best friend and her husband are expecting their first child basically anytime now! J  For her baby shower her mother and I were trying to think of creative and cute things for the cupcake toppers!  Well, I looked and looked and finally, I came across candy pacifiers.  I thought to myself, this is toooooo cute!  So needless to say, I gave it a try!

1)  You start with Lifesavers, Jellybeans and icing (whatever brand you prefer)

2)  Next, you take the icing and put a little in the circle part of the lifesaver.

3)  Then, you take another lifesaver and hold it upright and attach it to the middle of the previous lifesaver (the one that has icing in the middle) It should resemble the shape of a ring.

4)  Now take the jelly bean and insert it at the top of the lifesaver in the middle part where there is still a little icing.  You may need to add a little more icing at this point to make the jelly bean stay.

5)  And there you have it a candy pacifier!!!!!  Or if you are doing a bridal shower a candy ring!

6)  It looks great on a cupcake!

Unclaimed Anointing

Recently, a popular morning show did a segment on unclaimed government money.  It wasn’t long after the announcement was made, that people started searching for their potential unclaimed cash.   There was such an interest that people literally wrote mounds and mounds of letters thanking the show for bringing awareness and investigating the methods of recovering the dough.  Would you believe that there are just as many if not more people who have unclaimed anointing?  As I used to ponder the question, what does God want me to do, I use to draw blank.  I use to say, I can’t sing, I’m not a preacher, I am not a musician or an adjutant so I just don’t know what I can possibly do to edify the kingdom.  However, scripture reminds us that after Christ left the earth, He left us the gift of the Holy Spirit (John 14:16). Now all Christians are anointed, chosen for a specific purpose in furthering God's Kingdom (1 John 2:20).  Have you thought about what your purpose is?  It doesn’t have to be in the typical “talent” box, for there are many different talents that God has blessed us with that can lift up the kingdom and be a blessing to others.  So my friends take this as a public service announcement…Reclaim your anointing by getting on your knees and calling on God; He will answer you and He will direct you to your anointing.  What are you anointed to do?

Just a thought,

Through the eyes of a blind person

Have you ever stopped and wondered if no one could physically see you, how you would be viewed.  Would the drop dead gorgeous woman be envisioned as ugly or would the person who most view as unattractive now be the most sought after?  I never would like to have my sight taken away, but I must say that blind people definitely have an advantage of truly seeing people for who they are.  Behind the makeup, behind the hair extensions, behind the clothes, behind the career, behind the family, who are you?  What picture are you painting in the minds of people?  Is your greatest attribute your physical features or is your greatest attribute your spirit?  Just like wealth, beauty has the ability to come and go if not managed well and quite frankly at times, our beauty can be compared to economics, as the supply goes up, the demand comes down.  Meaning that we may find ourselves surrounded by a multitude of beautiful, younger and/or newer persons and thus our once desirable looks may be less desirable or even replaced.  However, inner beauty doesn’t age; it only gets better with time, that is if you nourish it. Galatians 6:9 states, Let us not become weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest if we do not give up and Proverbs 31:30 states Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the LORD is to be praised.  Therefore, don’t place so much emphasis on your outward appearance; let your spirit be your beauty.  Be a woman of virtue, be a man of integrity and most importantly be a child of God and you will be the most beautiful person.

Beauty is as Beauty Does!

As many of us begin to age, we notice that our skin and body starts to do things that they have never done before.  As far as our bodies are concerned, we may start to see and feel the signs of aging and our skin sometimes begins to transform in weird ways such as wrinkles, age spots and adult acne.  While I would love to agree with some skincare companies and swear that the fountain of youth is all in a bottle, I would not feel comfortable misleading many.  The truth is (at least as I envision it), our skin just like anything else must be taken care of in its entirety,  after all it is the largest organ of our body and the first line of defense!!!  Topical products are only one part of having healthy skin!  I know that all of the skincare companies realize that each consumer is super intelligent, but I wish that they would put a disclaimer on its packages and say “This product will be at its best, when you eat the right foods, drink plenty of water and exercise”.  Green vegetable are great foods that have various benefits for the entire body.  They are full of vitamins, minerals and protein compounds.  Vitamins and minerals both exist in plant and animal matter and usually cannot be produced by your body, so they must come from your diet.  As stated in an article on Livestrong.com, protein is necessary for cell structure repair and growth in nearly all of your body's tissues and plays a key role in metabolism.  Chlorophyll can be found in many green vegetables such as asparagus, beet greens, bell peppers, broccoli, Brussels sprouts, green cabbage, celery, collard greens, green beans, green peas, kale, leeks, green olives, parsley, romaine lettuce, sea vegetables, spinach, Swiss chard, turnip greens and more.  The key is to NOT OVERCOOK these vegetables as many researchers have found that two thirds of the chlorophyll was removed after 20 minutes of boiling.   So the next time, you are in the grocery store, pick up one of the listed vegetables and include it in your diet.  Not only will you start to see a difference in your skin, but you will also feel a difference in your body.  Reverse the curse and start taking care of your entire body today by including the many natural products that were made and manufactured by God!

Make it a great day!

How to overcome the barriers of hurt!

Soooo lately I've realized that more than not people, especially women are hurting and in need of an encouraging lift, only not from others but from themselves.  My grandmother used to say if you haven't experienced a let down, well just keep living!  I hate sounding like a Debbie Downer, but it's true, life hands out all kinds of issues.  The question is, how does one handle each circumstance?  For some they have openly professed, when life gives lemons, make lemonade!  Or my glass is not half empty, it's half full.  It's always easier to give encouraging advice to others but when hurt or pain hits home, how do you encourage yourself?  I am a strong believer in God and I have always known prayer to be effective.  Many of us have lost touch of our beings.  We are friends to our friends but enemies to ourselves.  I challenge you to have an outer body experience, and use the same strength and words of encouragement that you would give to your friends to yourself.  The very thing or things that keep you so far down, develop its antonym.  Instead of saying, I'm ugly, say I'm beautiful, or instead of feeling worthless know that you are priceless.  Stop standing on the sidelines of life and cheering everyone else on.  Give yourself that much needed pat on your back!  The very fact that you are still here is a testament that God is still waiting for you to leave  your mark.  Ask God to give you His vision and start seeing yourself the way He sees you!  You are amazing, forgiven, a blessing and a Gem, you are a Pearl!

A Luau fit for a kid!

Recently I was asked to decorate a party for a 3 year old with a Luau theme.  Of course there are mountains of the decorations and food ideas out there, but I wanted to make this Luau kid friendly.  I started on my research and as always I began with the client's interest.  What I realized quickly was the mom was pretty laid back and pretty much left all of the planning tome with one exception, there were plenty of leis.  Also, because the parents were supplying the food, that was one thing I could strike off of my list.  I thought and thought but there were no reallllllly different ways to host a Luau.  This is what I came up with, instead of having actual fruit skewers, I had fruit skewers made of fruit slices and marshmallows...really cute and quite simple.  http://www.ehow.com/how_5210760_make-candy-kabobs-kids.htmlNext, for my centerpiece, I took a traditional tropical party hat and decorated it with artificial Green Ti leaves and a leis (you can find them at most dollar stores), of course I used the Luau themed tablecloths, napkins and plates.  I also, made a tropical punch with lemonade and fresh kiwi, strawberries and berries.  The chairs were decorated with grass skirts and the kids played Limbo with Hawaiian music playing in the background.  There were plenty of leis and grass skirts and as an arts and craft activity, the kids made their very own leis out of construction paper flowers (you draw the flowers and cut the flowers out fold the flower in half and punch a hole so that it's in the center), 2 drinking straws per leis (cut 2 drinking straws in 8 pieces**4 pieces per straw**) and yarn (thread the yarn through the straw and thread the flowers as well until you have the desired amount of flowers. http://www.wikihow.com/Make-a-Paper-Lei It may sound weird, but it's really easy.  I topped the party off with tropical cupcakes with luau umbrella picks.  It turned out great and the little princess and her parents were happy!

A spa party fit for a princess!

Mz. Pearl!  The birthday girl :)
If you're thinking of a cool way to pamper your princess, consider having a spa party!  The idea is to get some friends togther and allow them to enjoy being pampered all while having a blast!  The first thing to consider is where you would like to have the party.  Make sure you have plenty room to accomodate the various stations and the girls.  I would limit the amount of girls to 6 so that you can provide the maximum amount of fun!  Next, decide what stations you want to have.  Some really cool ideas are "Fancy Fingers" the nail painting station, "Perfect Pedi's", the pedicure station, "Fun Facials" the facial station (Don't forget the cucumbers) and "Happy Hair", the hair updo station.  Those are just a few, there are countless ideas that will both be pampering and fun for the girls.  Next, you can either have the girls bring robes, flip flops and towels, or you can provide them.  Moving along, make sure that you have enough chairs for the girls and if it's a birthday party provide an extra special chair for the birthday girl by decorating it.    Provide fruity drinks and finger food for the girls and have an older brother or friend help serve the girls.  You're all set to have a fun spa-filled day with your little lady, don't forget the super cool music, magazines and maybe a funny movie to top off the day.

Planting!

It's almost that time at least so I thought, time to plant!!!!!!!  If your anything like me you have every color thumb except GREEN, but of course thanks to hgtv.com there is always help for the greenless thumbers!  Last year I was very proud of my vegetable garden because well it looked good to me at least.  The problem was my vegetables were not growing as expected.  After checking with local gardeners and reading up on gardens, I realized that I neglected to follow a few key rules!  Rule #1, make sure that your soil is right.  This basically means getting your "dirt" loose enough to allow plants to grow.  In my case, I had lots of clay and it made it really hard for my plants to grow.  Simply buy enough compost, sphagnum peat moss, rotted manures and if drainage is a problem buy some sand.  Make sure that you get your hands dirty and work the soil to make sure that the soil is mixed thoroughly.  By now you probably have a good idea of what type of plants or vegetables you want to plant.  Pay close attention to the space needed between the plants.  One of the first fruits that I have planted are strawberries.  I am attaching a link to HGTV.com with precise instructions since they are the pros!  Have fun gardening!

Redken, Nioxin and Moroccan Oil

I must say I believe that Redken products are the best!  Since I began to use Redken products, I have seen a great change in the overall health of my hair.  The good thing is Redken offers products for all hair types so you are sure to find one that is suitable for your hair texture!  I use Redken Smooth Down because I do not get relaxers and it controls frizz.  If you are in the market for a new Shampoo and Conditioner try Redken I am sure you will be pleased!  Also, if your hair is thin or thinning and you want a product to help thicken your hair follicle try Nioxin products.  Like Redken there are many kinds to choose from allowing the consumer to find the product that actually remedies the issue.   I have baby fine hair and I have always been concerned with my edges so I tried Nioxin for thinning hair and it has worked wonders.  I choose to use both Redken Smooth Down and Nioxin for thinning hair and my result is shiny, bouncy, fuller and healthier hair!  Remember to get your ends trimmed regularly and eliminate the amount of oil you use.  Btw a super great hair oil is Moroccan Oil a little goes a looooooooooooonnnnng way!

Facials

To my surprise many people have never had a facial and their reasoning is Why get one?  Well there are several reasons to get a facial and the one that seems strikingly popular is Aging!  Although there are no magic potions that will stop aging altogether, there are products that will help slow aging down.  But in order to find that perfect product made just for you, you must identify your skin type.  Is your skin oily, dry, dehydrated, combination or acneic?  What concerns you the most with your skin may not be the most imminent issue that you may be facing and that is why it is important to get a facial.  Estheticians are skilled at proper cleansing and helping your skin achieve the healthiest glow possible.  Even though finding a great Esthetician will be beneficial he or she cannot diagnose anyone with a skin condition only a Dermatologist can.  However, Estheticians are trained to identify certain area of concerns that will need to be addressed by a doctor.  After you receive a facial it is very important to purchase products that will maintain your skin, this is called a skincare regimen.  A cleanser, exfoliant and moisturizer are the basic products that all people who are trying to improve their skin's appearance should have.  Remember to drink plenty of water and to exercise, sweating removes toxins and the water replaces the lost moisture back in your body!  I always like to try to relate everything to the Word of God and the scripture that comes to my mind is 1 Corinthians 13:11  When I was a child, I talked like a child, I thought like a child, I reasoned like a child. When I became a man, I put childish ways behind me. (NIV)  The same is true for skincare except it would go a little like this, When I was a child skin cell renewal was quick, I had healthy skin effortlessly but when I became an adult something happened my cell turnover rate began to slow down and I was forced to pay more attention to my skin, to what I ate, to how fast I got up and down to how close I had to be to read something blah blah blah!  The point is whatever age you are, it's never to late to start healthy skincare practices, your cell turnover may slow down but it doesn't stop!  So take care of your skin after all it's the largest organ of the body!

Clinique Skincare

I've recently started using the 3 step skincare system by clinique and I must say that I absolutely love it!  First, it's an affordable regimen, second and very important, it provides results!  After only 2 weeks into using it I saw an immediate change.  First you cleanse the skin with a liquid facial soap.  Don't get too worried with the (soap) part, it's actually a nondrying cleanser.  Next, apply the exfoliant which is actually labeled as Clarifying Lotion and lastly, apply the moisturizer.  Remember to use the actual system that works for your skin type (oily, dry, problematic or combination), Clinique has done a great job incorporating all skin types into their products.  A great skincare regimen is key to maintaining a healthy glow.

Inner Beauty

When I really begin to put things into perspective, I am truly blessed.  I may not have all of the money or the material items I want but I have everything I need.  I have come to realize that it's not how other people view you but how you view yourself.  I am a firm believer of the Bible and one scripture that always resonates in my spirit is "As a man thinketh in his heart, so is he". (Proverbs 23:7 NIV)   Today I ask you, how are you viewing yourself?  When you look in the mirror do you see all that you aren't or all that you ARE.  In my opinion, that scripture, is God's way of telling us to get some confidence!  I am challenging you today to put on the same glasses that God wears and see yourself as the wonderful person that He made you to be!  In case you didn't hear, your dreams are knocking!

The flu season is in full effect and if you haven't been effected or know someone who has consider yourself blessed!  Obviously, the best way to prevent germs is to live in a bubble lol, however because that's not practical, proper handwashing and drinking lots of OJ and water will at least help!  If you do find yourself sick from the flu or a cold here is a simple recipe that you can add to your bath to help with congestion and aches and pains.

Cold and Flu Bath

Kennedi's Spa Party

My daughter recently had her very first spa party and of course I was the organizer!  I researched various cool ideas to make her party stand out more and I came across some very cool blogs that gave great food ideas!  My very favorite was candy sushi!  I have to be honest, the concept was super easy but it was reallly messy!  All in all, it came out great and the girls loved it!  It was a hit!

Mz. Pearl Pretty Parties

Since this is my very first blog I wanted to introduce my passion to my readers.  I started my mobile spa business, Mz. Pearl Pretty Parties in 2009 because I wanted to merge my passion of skincare with my love for children.  I came up with the name Mz. Pearl because of my daughter's old spirit and since  beginning the business, I have held various spa parties with a variety of themes.  My business is based out of Richmond, VA but I am also available in the Washington, DC Metro area, the Tidewater area and Northern North Carolina.  I hope my blogs will inspire some, uplift many and encourage all!  Be blessed!
